How does a LiFePO4 battery work?


The Lithium-ion type of battery charges by moving ions from one side to the other. Lithium ions are the small red balls found in the battery. To keep the system in operation, they move around. The positive electrode on the left side is made of a material called LiFePO4. The full form is lithium-iron-phosphate. The phosphate and iron create a grid which traps the ions.

1. Charging the Battery

The middle membrane is used to charge the lithium ions. This membrane is made of a special type of plastic known as a polymer. The membrane has many tiny pores that make it easier for ions to flow through. The negative side is made up of carbon atoms and has a lattice. They are capable of trapping and retaining ions that attempt to move to the opposite side.

2. The Battery can be Discharged

The same thing happens when you drain the battery. However, the reverse process occurs. The negative electrode allows electrons to flow through it, causing the lithium ions to move again. They travel through the membrane to return to the substance known as the iron-phosphate lactice. They can be stored on the opposite side for as long as they are charged again.

3. The Ions are moving

Pay close attention to the electrode, where the lithium ions reside. The negative electrode carbon is where the lithium ions are stored if the battery has been fully charged.

4. Construction Method

These units are constructed of thin layers made from copper foils, polymer and aluminum. The chemicals are applied to the layers as paste. They are usually rolled like jelly-rolls and kept in a steel canister. The same process is used to store AA batteries.

5. Replacing

These cells are what power the 12 volt lithium-ion batteries in various devices. To increase the amp-hour capacity, and voltage, they are connected in series and parallel. Each cell produces 3.3V, with or without adjustments. If you connect four of these cells in series, you'll get 13.2 volts total. These battery packs are the best option if you need to replace a 12V lead acid battery pack.
